What will 2007 look like in the news? Here are some guesses as to what the next year in the mainstream media might look like...
While 2006 saw some interesting developments in the mainstream media production and presentation of the news, we are certainly headed for another exciting year. Here are some of the ways in which 2007 will be covered in the news War in Iraq: While this emerged as a deciding factor in the American mid-term elections, it promises to rear its' head again in the year to come. Whether the mainstream news continues to press this issue with the White House, and the incoming Democrats, is yet to be seen. This will also be an issue to watch in Canada, in terms of how the Harper government responds to possible overtures from the Bush administration on putting Canadian troops into the area. Canadian Political Situation: It looks as though the Canadian people will once again be going to the polls in 2007. Last year's election, in January 2006, had to contend with public apathy due to the holidays; this year, if we do see an election in the spring, there will undoubtedly be more interest from the media and Canadian citizens. International Crises: The North Korean development of weapons of mass destruction is still a major issue that was never resolved in 2006. Palestine and Israel have yet to come to a long-term agreement of any sort, and Lebanon's political woes are far from over. Somalia may be free from Islamic rule for now, but the guerrilla warfare is just beginning. Whether these three predictions indeed come true is worth watching, listening, and reading for: enjoy the news this year, and remember to be a critical media consumer!
