I wonder if unions will become more relevant in the coming years, or if we've really seen the last of their dominance. Whether you agree with these types of organizations or not, it is hard to deny that they have done some really great things for those involved, as well as for society as a whole

I work in the media - and most reporters in Canada belong to a guild. Editors often see little of interest in labour stories unless strike action is pending that could inconvenience readers. (I recall covering rotating strike action by Parks Canada employees, as an example.) Union politics probably doesn't get too many people excited, thus the lack of media coverage.

I definitly agree about the lack of excitement in union politics for many people- this goes hand-in-hand with the fact that participation in unions has decreased substantially over the last few decades. With fewer Canadians belonging to unions, they have a decidedly less personal stake in them.
