In response to Expert op-eds posted by Kate82:
Celebrity commentators are a great way to drum up business and help lackluster sales. Face it: newspapers are fighting a battle against online news feeds, as well as running a business, and regardless of the romantic idealism people may have, having a celebrity contribute an editorial will help boost sales and visibility of the publication.

That is not to say that celebrities are not experts in a particular field or ignorant to what could be called "real life." As far as humanitarian issues are concerned, having a celebrity such as Bono writing about AIDS in Africa or starvation in Latin America can help raise awareness in the homes of average people, which can in turn inspire people to greatness and to make a change.

But at the end of the day, newspapers, magazines, ezines, etc. are businesses trying to make money. Celebrities sell copy. It's a win-win situation for the publication.
